AS PART OF OUR ONGOING COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABILITY WE'RE LAUNCHING A COLLABORATION WITH HEMPER®

Ever since we set up our sustainable R[ECO]NSIDER brand we've been looking to collaborate with brands that share the same vision, as well as ones that can teach us new processes and production techniques that make a real positive difference to the environment. This is how our collaboration with Hemper® came about. The concept behind their brand was to create sustainable products using naturally-cultivated hemp, at the same time as boosting decent work for farmers in Nepal.

It all began in the mountain villages of western Nepal. There is a centuries-long tradition of hemp in the region.

In these villages, rural families cultivate and then harvest the hemp. Next they boil it, releasing the fibres from the inside, and later spin them to make yarn.

The yarn is taken to Kathmandu to a community in the Budhanilkantha neighbourhood. The community is home to people with limited means. The women in the families there wash the yarn and prepare it for production. When it's ready, they create the fabrics themselves by weaving the yarn using a traditional loom.

Later, tailors in the Budhanilkantha community produce the final products: backpacks and bumbags.
